Cat Power at Asbury Park, August 9, 2009
Since her Cd, The Greatest came out in 2006, I have been in love with Cat Power. The Cd, along with the Memphis Rhythm Band and ensuing tour was the greatest, as you can see any time on YouTube. Cat’s most recent back up band, the Dirty Delta Blues Band, is a four piece blues band. Her live shows have been filled with her rendition of dozens of R&B standards.
So, after all these years of loving her voice I finally got to see her live. I could hear her singing as I circled my car around the open air venue looking for a parking spot. I kept thinking that I was missing one of my favorite Cat originals, Empty Shell.
Parked car, walked to venue, walked to sweet spot in front, stage right, enjoyed the show, took pictures…that’s what I did. Here’s my impressions:
Her voice is the thing. It is unique and wonderful. Cat’s enunciation was horrible so none of the lyrics were understandable. The band hardly changed tempos between songs, so one song was indistinguishable from the next. Her band, adequate, nothing special, no surprises. I did miss a third of her set, so I don’t know if she sang anything but bland covers.
What to say next…I still love her voice…I hope that she goes back to writing her own stuff, and I’m glad that I had a chance to see her looking happy and healthy. I will always love Chan Marshall/aka/Cat Power for giving us The Greatest.
