CD Review – David Luning “Just Drop on By”
Cross-posted from:Me, Myself, Music and Mysteries
Ok so last night I was checking out some of the Music Charts that I regularly visit to find new music and on the Freeform American Roots Chart (FAR Chart) couched among many albums at number 16 was Just Drop on By a self-released album by David Luning. I give it the 30-60 second test and it passed with flying colors and went on the iPod this morning!
David was born and raised in the Redwoods of California and now calls San Francisco home. He attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston with a major in Film Scoring. David plays guitar, piano, and harmonica, combining a variety of genres including Americana, Folk, Country, and Rock. He performs in house concerts and small venues as a captivating solo act, and also performs in bigger venues with top-notch players collectively called the David Luning Band. Here’s some info from his website:
In the last three years, David has won numerous songwriting competitions; been nominated for the “Best Americana Band” in the North Bay; opened for class acts such as Leon Russell, Dave Alvin, Ramblin Jack Elliott, Rodney Crowell, Matt the Electrician, Junior Brown, Carolyn Wonderland, The Waymores, & Albert Lee; headlined at major venues; played in festivals such as EarleFest and The Stagecoach Festival; and received song placements prominently featured in major films and commercials, and he hadn’t even come out with his debut studio album yet!
He’s opened for some big names, but here’s the one that makes me jealous! David and The Brothers Comatose, I bet that was a GREAT show!!
Anyway the album is terrific full of great songs Like Whiskey Bottle”, “Buddies Till The End of Time”, “bed of Roses” and “My Baby Blues on Wheels”. Hell all the tracks are well written and produced, like Andrew Greenhalgh, ReviewYou says:
“David Luning’s Just Drop On By is definitely an album that you’ll want to revisit again and again. Colored with homespun whimsy and pleasantly world-weary honesty, this record is indicative of exactly why this artist has already experienced so much success and rubbed elbows with such heavyweights. If he plays his cards right, he’ll soon be one of those very heavyweights.”
or Kyle Terrizzi, Host of “Listen Up” Podcast from Shut Up Songwriter’s:
“David Luning is one of those exceedingly rare talents who deserves your full attention. Now. He is so fully formed as an artist that those who are fortunate enough to find him will all but heave a sign of relief at the discovery, like I did, as if to say, ‘Finally. I’ve been looking for you!'”
Regarding Just Drop On By, “…it might be one of the best records anyone’s ever sent me. Sounds. F$%&ing. Phenomenal.”
