CD Review – Kieran Kane, David Francey and Lucas Kane “Go Jane Go”
Go Jane Go, from the acoustic trio of Kieran Kane, David Francey and Lucas Kane, is a intimate acoustic disc I’d file somewhere Doc Watson, Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark. Recorded live in an Australian farmhouse, the stripped down disc combines toe-tapping, trouble and heartbreak on a dozen original tunes and includes a reworked cover of Little Walter’s cheating blues “Tell Me Mama”. On the sour heart, sour grapes “When I’m Not Thinking About You” David sings:
“Look at all these things that I can do
When I’m not thinking about you
Hardly ever jump when I hear the phone
Try to leave the light on when I’m home
I’ve been doing pretty well getting by here by myself”
The title track from “Go Jane Go” tells the tale of a teenage girl’s pregnancy and her friend’s decision to break away:
“So she said goodbye to Ali
Shoved a few things in a sack
Hitched a ride to Hadley
And never once looked back”.
The banjo propelled “I Live In Fear” perhaps captures the album’s mood the best:
“My days are long
And my nights are longer”
It’s hard to call an album recorded in Australia that ends with “Moon Over Melbourne” Americana but
whatever you want to call it give it a listen.
Highly recommended.
