Crazy Old Man
Started this song on Woody’s birthday. I’d been thinking about him, how self absorbed people are, how we have become a nation without compassion and how the less fortunate are either “invisible” or blamed for their condition. So I got this idea, WWWS(“What would Woody Sing? “). Not sure he actually would have or not. A lot of politics in the air and a lot of acrimony. I don’t know a lot about policy, so I put it in more basic terms. If you like it and want a copy, let me know. Seems weird to sell a song about kindness.
I ain’t nobody just a crazy old man
I say things so simple that people don’t understand
call me a loser you can call me a freak
but when my head hits the pillow it’s easy to sleep
I know some people who drive fancy cars
need big old houses with security guards
they don’t like mirrors, they get startled by sounds
and they think everybody is dragging them down
I was that way once then I took a fall
I said this can’t be happenin’ as I bounced off the wall
the horses were snorting while the king’s men just stared
they all knew who I was but they just didn’t care
Now you can fit my whole life in a shopping cart or two
but if you ask me for help I’ll give it to you
if you tell me you’re hungry you can share from my plate
because the distance between us is a matter of fate
So when you someone hurting try and lend them a hand
try not to look through them and try to understand
you might be proud of the things that you do
if it happened to them it can happen to you
