Do You Really Think Hank Done It This Way?
I’m really feeling this tune today. This week. This year.
It’s the same old tune, fiddle and guitar
Where do we take it from hereRhinestone suits and new shiny cars
We’ve been the same way for years
We need to change
Some days I’m feeling Hank. Some days I’m feeling it Waylon. Some days I’m feeling it Robert Earl Keen. This week, tho, I’m feeling it Uncle Tupelo, and this Thursday’s feeling like a Friday, feeling like Jay Farrar and Son Volt.
Somebody told me when I got to Nashville
Son you finally got it madeOld Hank made it here, we’re all sure that you will
But I don’t think Hank done it this way
I don’t think Hank done it this way
If it feels like you’re doing everything you are supposed to be doing, doing everything right and getting no where.
Ten years down the road, making one night stands
Speeding my young life awayTell me one more time just so I understand
Are you sure Hank done it this way
Did Ol’ Hank really do it this way?
Just remember Hank and Waylon and all the good old boys that have gone before you. They did the best they could with what they had…well, they did what they could with what they had. (I’ll leave the discussion of “best they could” for another day.)
I’ve seen the world with a five piece band
Looking at the back side of meSinging my songs and one of his now and then
But I don’t think Hank done ’em this a’way
No I don’t think Hank done ’em this a’way
There’s always a better a’way. We all have to find our own way.
