There’s been a lot said about Zoe Muth, both in No Depression and beyond, with reviewers likening her to “Seattle’s Emmylou,” or an icon of underground country, but you know what’s great about Zoe? She totally transcends all the hype. And I should know, I worked with her as a publicist on her first country album, so I wrote some of that hype! But Zoe’s exactly the kind of artist that makes all this worthwhile, because you realize that everything we’re writing and all the friends we’re telling about her, and all the effort we put in as journalists, publicists, and bloggers means that people we don’t know are going to pick up her album and think the exact same thing we thought when we first heard it: “Holy shit, these songs are amazing!”
No Depression is proud to present an exclusive first listen to Zoe Muth’s brand-new EP, Old Gold. The EP drops nationally on July 24 on Signature Sounds Records and features five covers and one original. The covers draw from eclectic sources like Canadian sister act The McGarrigles, vintage country singer Charlie Feathers (Zoe found his song “I’ve Been Deceived” via the public library), Dock Boggs (she sings “Country Blues,” and totally redefines this old chestnut), and John Prine (“Maureen, Maureen”). But you know what’s really amazing about this EP? Her one original, “Walking the Line.” It’s a song so good that it outshines every other track on the EP. That’s how good her songwriting is.
