Field Reportings from Issue #5
CORRECTIONS: Bringing Down the Horse, the new album by the WALLFLOWERS, was released by Interscope Records, not Virgin as we credited in a review in ND #4. The band’s self-titled first album in 1992 was released by Virgin….
Thanks to Don Yates, program director at Seattle’s KCMU-FM and No Depression contributor, for pointing out our mistake in issue #4’s cover story, where we credited the HANK WILLIAMS hit “Lovesick Blues” as being written by EMMETT MILLER. The song was written by IRVING MILLS and CLIFF FRIEND….
This one goes back a couple issues, but a review of MIKE HENDERSON’s album Edge of Night in ND #3 credited Henderson as the writer of the song “I Wouldn’t Lay My Guitar Down”. The song was actually written by EDDY CLEARWATER…
Our apologies to ND contributor Sarah Marcus; in the process of editing her review of NEIL YOUNG’s pseudonymous “Travelling Echos” gig in Princeton, Calif., that ran in ND #4, the song title “Pocahontas” was changed to ” ” (an instrumental, perhaps?). Damn that spell-check…
AROUND THE WORLD, AND BEYOND: ND contributor Jim Stringer reports catching a country band called OLD FRONTIER at a German restaurant in Sao Paolo, Brazil, during a recent visit below the equator. Southern hemisphere, here we come!…
And how far behind could outer space be, given this bit of news: BILLY MUMY, aka (Danger!) Will Robinson of TV’s “Lost in Space” fame, has a new roots-rock band called the JENERATORS. The aforementioned Mr. Stringer comments: “Although Dr. Smith is not part of the group, the bass player has a large glass head and arms that look like vacuum cleaner hoses.”
FIND THAT BAND
Jon Wayne:
It’s alive!
Jon Wayne fans!
Here are some of the facts, to the best of my knowledge. L.A. studio owner, engineer, bassist, guitarist, vocalist David Naught and drummer Jim Goodall are the creative forces behind this work of art known as Texas Funeral. The live band consisted of Naught (aka Jon Wayne) on guitar and vocals, Goodall (aka Jimbo) on drums, Doug Livingston (aka Earnest Beauvine) on lead guitar, and Billy Bob on bass, replaced as of Sept. 9, 1991, by Tommy Spurlock (aka Timmy Turlock). They recently had a song in the movie From Dusk Til Dawn. Current whereabouts of the band members are unknown, except Spurlock/Turlock, who seems to have migrated to Nashville and has been spotted recently walking the streets of Juarez, Mexico, with his gang of newfound followers in hot pursuit of impending nuptial party favors. There you have it.

[Ed. note: Just to further perpetuate the mystery that is Jon Wayne, this letter arrived with a postmark from Nashville but written on stationery from the Hotel Garni Bayerischer Hof in Nurnberg, Germany. Man, this band gets around.]
Jon Wayne:
It’s alive II!
While in Australia last year, I heard the lyrics to Jon Wayne’s “Texas Jail Cell” on the radio but attached to a totally different song. The DJ said it was a new recording by The Cruel Sea, one of Australia’s most popular bands. The song is “Better Get A Lawyer”, and partial writing credit is given to Jon Wayne. So I hope someone can track him down, as he should have a pretty decent royalty cheque coming to him from Down Under.

Nevermind Jon Wayne:
Bring on the Romans!
Per one of your newly added features [“Find That Band”], does anybody know what happened to The Romans? I think they did one album back in about ’86 or so. I haven’t been able to find anything else by them.
