Flanked By Industry Vets David Kershenbaum, Kevin Killen and Diane Warren Singer-Songwriter JUSTYNA KELLEY Readies Debut Album
Every once in a while an artist comes down the ‘pike that merits serious attention from fans of popular music.
Singer, songwriter, Justyna Kelley is one such artist whose radio friendly folk-influenced pop fits comfortably along the lines of Sheryl Crow, Jewel, Colbie Caillat and Taylor Swift. Her debut recording, “Over The Moon,” due this fall, features songwriting collaborations between Kelley and a host of hit making songwriters and world class musicians. It’s an “old school” album that harkens back to the 70’s heyday of Joni Mitchell at her finest, circa “Blue” and “Court and Spark.” Produced by David Kershenbaum (Tracy Chapman, Joe Jackson), and Kevin Killen (U2, Peter Gabriel, Elvis Costello, Tori Amos), Kelley’s production team augmented by co-producer and manager, Guy Eckstine, delivers songs that are easy on the ears and that pull heavily on the heart.
Highlighted by pop gems “Over The Moon,” “Once In A While” and the Diane Warren penned, “Life’s Like That,” Kelley soars above the tracks with lush vocal harmonies surrounded by rich sonic textures. Kelley mines deeper territory with themes of love gone wrong on the mountainous “Stay,” featuring Paul Freeman, and the whimsical “Shoulda Known,” featuring Kyler England of The Rescues. Not afraid to rock out or display her Nashville roots, Kelley channels Shania Twain on the aggressive “Pushover,” sends you soaring on the irresistible “The One I Love,” and ventures uptown on the Motown-inspired groove of “Have You Seen Him?”
As a build up to the full-length release, Kelley’s management company Iconique Music Group (IMG) laid the groundwork by digitally releasing two singles with accompanying videos (“Over The Moon & “The One I Love”) with three more singles to follow over the next three months (“Shoulda Known,” “Once In A While” and “Pushover”). IMG also produced an engaging EPK that immediately drew the interest of The Ovation Network, a network co-owned by The Weinstein Company and seen in 30 million homes. Ovation TV quickly began featuring Justyna in their upfront advertising campaigns and commercial TV spots, with talk of “the making of an artist” weekly series debut in the fall.
Currently based in Los Angeles, Justyna frequently collaborates with its tight-knit songwriting community that reminds her of growing up in “Music City” where impromptu jam sessions were always the norm at the Kelley household. When Justyna ecstatically received her first guitar at age nine, she quickly realized that this was not only her calling, but a deep and heartfelt passion that she would pursue without compromise. In her teens, Kelley was able to hone her songwriting skills to create a body of work that continued to grow exponentially and she became even more skilled in guitar and piano as her reverence for musical icons such as Joni Mitchell, Patti Griffin, James Taylor, The Beatles and even Led Zeppelin continued to inspire her.
The delicate balance between artistic depth and mainstream pop music is a tightrope act that Justyna Kelley navigates effortlessly, allowing her to cross generational lines without pandering to any. Male and female fans of John Mayer and Carrie Underwood will find themselves humming along to her melodies and feeling over the moon after trying out a harmony or two!
