FRESH TRACK: Jenny Owen Youngs – ‘Everglades’
“Everglades” was co-written with Christian Lee Hutson when Jenny was still living in LA. She wrote it in her home studio at the time, leaving the door open to breeze and the occasional honk of neighboring peacocks. Warm harmonies float over plucked guitar, shuffled drums, and muscular electric guitar riffs as she sings “when I was in the Everglades / caught a lot of shade.” Youngs’ gentle, lilting melody shimmers with self-reflection and deep truths, in this case exploring the murkiness between two sides of the story, truth and lies.
“People say there are three sides to every story: your side, my side, and the truth. I have discovered through trial and error that further subdivisions can emerge when you’re not entirely honest with yourself. ‘Everglades’ is concerned with the truth, and lies, and whatever gray area might exist in the cracks between the two.” — Jenny Owen Youngs
