Great Aunt – ‘Oh, Won’t You Save Me’
Outwardly, Great Aunt’s “Oh, Won’t You Save Me” is joyous and buoyant — a New Orleans-inspired street beat and an orchestra of clapping hands invites us in. It’s a head fake, though: The song deals with deeply personal themes of mental illness, self-worth, and unhealthy coping mechanisms.
“There’s strength and bravery in being able to ask for help when you need it,” says songwriter and vocalist Megan Bird. “And to accept that help. So it’s very much about family, faith, and interconnectedness.”
The film clip for “Oh, Won’t You Save Me” features a bedazzling bespoke universe of monsters and mythic beings, created by theater maker and animator Bernadette Trench-Thiedeman. The journey is the thing: It’s best taken together.
