Danish indie folk outfit Late Runner is the brainchild of Asger Tarpgaard, who had major success in the late ’90s at the age of 16 with his band Superheroes that topped the charts over the course of three albums and five EPs.
Late Runner’s debut album, Nothing’s Real Anymore, draws on a well of inspiration from the likes of The Beach Boys, Beck, George Harrison, and Paul McCartney. Freely mixing modern clarity and an ear for original and natural sounding melody with ’70s production vibes, it’s contemplative music expressed with clear, vulnerable, and warm singing and thoughtful and introspective lyrics.
About the Video: It was directed by Peder Pedersen, who also directed Aqua’s “Barbie Girl” and PowerSolo’s “Lonely Gal.” It was filmed in Copenhagen during the heatwave this summer and stars Tarpgaard (Late Runner) in a Napoleon costume as an image of the disillusionment implied by the song’s title. Notably, he had heatstroke while wearing the costume around the city on one of the hottest days of the year! The 16 mm footage goes some way to cover up how sweaty it must actually have looked.
