Horse Stories New Album ‘November November’ and MP3 Download
Toby Burke, the singer/ songwriter behind Horse Stories is somewhat a maverick, somewhat an old soul; not a maverick in the sense of stale Republican political ideologies or communication missteps, but rather in the sense that his songs persist in setting a scene or creating an oasis for the listener to submerge themselves. In this manner, Burke’s writing style is one that runs perpendicular to today’s cookie cutter approach of snapping you up with dazzling hooks that provide easy digestion but also ultimately burn out fast. Rather, his songs are akin to small bookworms which burrow into your senses through careful measured advances. They’re the songs that come to you piece by piece, that acquaint themselves gradually, the way all close relationships evolve. The new songs on November, November are easily Burke’s most assured to date yet are also nostalgic, uplifting, melancholy, and illuminating.
Burke transplanted himself in Los Angeles in 2007 from his native home of Melbourne, Australia. It was there, holed-up in a windowless garage under his house in the Silver Lake neighborhood, that the material for November, November was arduously crafted and took shape over two years.
Giving praise to the most recent release from Horse Stories’, Everyone’s A Photographer, the coveted British music magazine, Mojo exclaimed, “Burke’s vocals evoke Joe Pernice, gentle, wracked, velvety exhalations that sweeten his powerfully bleak pieces and send his sunshine songs skyward”, while Q Magazine said that, “Projected via a quietly commanding voice, songs emerge pained and mysterious, but not without hope.”
