Hot Tuna at The Count Basie Theater August 22, 2009

One of the bands that I saw play many times when I went to Brooklyn College in the late 70’s early 80’s was Hot Tuna. Through all the incarnations of the San Francisco music scene, Jorma and Jack Cassidy, along with the Grateful Dead kept that music alive.
Cut to 2009 and the guys are still doing it. After a 30 year layoff I thought I’d revisit one of my favorite bands. I so wanted to like the show. I still love Jack and his bass, and a few times, just a few, he let loose with a barrage of bass runs that thrilled. The mix was muddy, bass and drums were too loud, the result was that all of Jorma’s fine tinkering on the guitar was lost. Bottom line; the show was disappointing. Jorma’s newer songs were boring and come to think of it, so were the older songs. Oh well, life goes on.
