What (if anything) different did you do leading up to the recording of the new album?
I relaxed a little more and focused on making this album an actual working piece of art. I gave it respect and loyalty. By “it” I mean the process the musicians the studio the whole pie.
Do you do anything different with your songs when you play them live, or do you like to have it sound like it does on your records
I love having my live shows sound like the record as much as possible. I hired an entire ensemble around this record. The more familiar the songs become, they start taking on “isms” and that certainly adds to the entertainment quality of said live performance.
How in the world did you come to sing backing vocals on Miranda Lamberts “All Kinds of Kinds”
Frank Liddell is my producer. He produced my last album “Velvet” and my latest “Aviator”. He also produces Miranda’s records. I know Miranda from years ago and it came together that way.
On Aviator “One and Only” leads off an amazing journey for the rest of the record. Where did this song come from?
A song Mando Saenz and I wrote together. It came soon after Velvet was recorded. Kinda reveals the inner workings of a one track mind. Awareness is sure to follow.
Tell me about your songwriting habits.
I travel constantly. Some ideas I write some I hum into my memos some I sit after hours and poke around with. Mostly plan, prepare and apply works best for me. Of course, consistency. It’ll dam up and become stagnant if you don’t do it. I wanna try to hone and stretch the mind. My mind.
