Beau + Luci Won’t Get Walked Over
Sometimes you chance your way onto a music scene…and then it takes you months to get it down on paper. Such is the case with the rousing performance of the sweet and saucy duo of Beau + Luci at the Red Light Café in Atlanta, Georgia. The sisters, which hail from Southern Georgia, took to the stage on May 25th and delivered a powerful set of original music along with one killer cover.
They explained why they opted to record and perform their version of the Arctic Monkey’s “Do I Wanna Know?”
It’s fairly easy to keep them straight. Luci is 2 years older at 22, has darker hair and tends to sing the lower harmonies…which are consistently well-balanced. Beau has a somewhat higher voice and often sings the melodies.
They described the evolution of their music to where it currently stands, which is kind of country with a “rock edge.”
The sisters claim to be blessed to be able to work on their music full-time, which allows them to get hands-on experience in the industry. Since our conversation they’ve played 34 shows (it took a while to count), and there’s no indication of them slowing down.
Despite the nod to Alex Turner, Beau + Luci seem to have their lyrical acts together as well. “50 Feet,” a song in which Luci was clearly moved into a stirring performance, they claimed as their favorite and a good representation of their “elemental lyrics.”
Another homage to their elemental roots was “Fire Dancer,” in which the subtle twang in the sisters’ voices was reminiscent of another artist I’ve recently covered, Hayley Reardon.
Beau + Luci talked a bit about entering the Atlanta music scene, which is much different from their swampland roots. They described it as tough since there are so many great bands, but also healthy since bands are typically supportive of each other. “It’s a family vibe, not a competition.”
They left me with a final, self-reflecting description of some of their music. They called it an energy of “I’m not taking this anymore, I’m not going to be soft and let people walk all over me.” Don’t worry, Beau + Luci, keep doing your thing and you won’t have to worry about that.
