Interview with Dale Watson at The Dionysium
Last night, I attended the Dionysium at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas. The Dionysium is
a monthly meeting at which debates are held, art is discussed, and “nerds” from all around town
meet. The hosts of this event are friends of my parents.
I had the pleasure of seeing my dad’s friends interview the legendary Austinite Dale Watson. The audience could tell Dale was very at ease on stage. After all, he’s been performing on stage
professionally since his late teens. My boyfriend described Watson’s now white pompadour as “awesome.”
Watson regaled us with stories from his experiences touring the world to his weekly gigs in Austin. He
showed himself to be quite witty and a good storyteller. It was interesting to me that he noted that his biggest successes have been in England. But I know that every time he plays the Broken Spoke here, it’s PACKED.
When I was much younger, I was lucky enough to sing a duet with Dale Watson at a private party. I’m sure he doesn’t remember, but it was an honor to sing with such a showman.
