Kyla Fairchild of No Depression: The Well-Rounded Radio Interview
Early last year I traded a bunch of emails with Kyla Fairchild, the Publisher of No Depression since 1995, and we got a chance to meet in person at SXSW 2009, running around Austin checking out some great music and eating delicious BBQ.
As a long-time fan of what No Depression did (and does) I was really happy to hear how they were taking the magazine and brand online in some new ways. As we talked in Austin, I got a chance to hear the story of how No Depression grew through the years in its print form and how it was evolving in this digital form.
Knowing the kinds of people who listen to my music interview audio podcast, Well-Rounded Radio, I knew it would make a terrific conversation about how a publication like No Depression was finding ways to translate its community and love of alt-country, Americana, and roots music into a new era, even in spite of a tough publishing climate. When I was in Seattle this spring, Kyla and I had a terrific conversation and I’ve edited it together with music that I’m sure No Depression readers will enjoy–including some highlights from the artists performing at the 2010 No Depression Festival on August 21st.

Enjoy!
