Chuck Schultz: When it came time to put together the new album, Salvation City, what was the impetus? How did you find all the songs?
Sundy Best: We had most of the songs already written, and after discussing, we were given the opportunity to record some of them. Once that began, it felt right and came together quickly, so we never really had time to second guess ourselves. We chose to release it when we did because, frankly, it was finished and we didn’t want to wait until the spring.
“Piece of Work” is my favourite song on the new album. Tell me about that.
True story. It kind of came out like a traditional country song, but we added a sort of Ray Charles vibe to it in the studio. We’re really happy with the way it came out. The acceptance of not being perfect, and being comfortable with that.
Songwriting… do you guys have a specific style or way you go about it?
We are usually always in the songwriting mindset, however we very rarely sit down with intentions to write a song. Most often it’s very inspirational and spontaneous. We play a lot of music, and that usually sparks creativity. We bounce a lot of ideas off of each other and then go from there.
Canada… Love that you’re doing shows up there. Tell me about touring up there (if you have before) and the fact you’re giggin’ with Dallas Smith..
This will be our first trip up there. Taking our swimsuits with us [laughs]. We’re really excited for it and to have been asked by Dallas himself is very humbling. We look to return to Canada often if we are received well. We get messages and tweets all the time from kinfolk up there and we haven’t even been yet. It’s very neat and we hope to form relationships that will last throughout our career.
