Songwriter Julien Baker made her late night television debut on Wednesday when she stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to perform her song “Turn Out the Lights.”
For the appearance, Baker performed solo with electric guitar. The arrangement is a touch more intimate but hews closely to that found on the track’s studio version, building to a cathartic climax at the song’s bridge.
“Turn Out the Lights” is the title track off Baker’s most recent album, released in late 2017. Turn Out the Lights was released to critical acclaim and landed on a number of year-end best of lists.
Baker was included in Amos Perrine’s Through the Lens column “No Depression Photographers Pick Their Outstanding Performances of the Year.” In that column, Chad Cochran cites Baker’s opening stint for one of Jason Isbell’s much buzzed about shows at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium in October.
