Justin Robinson to Leave Carolina Chocolate Drops; New Lineup Emerges
Justin Robinson to leave Chocolate Drops
I just heard an unsubstantiated rumor that Justin Robinson will be leaving the Carolina Chocolate Drops. According to a post on The Banjo Hangout, this was announced at the Drops’ Lincoln Center concert last night. According to the source, Justin is tired of constant touring and wants to resume his education. Also according to this source, Robinson will be replaced by Hubby Jenkins, a mandolin and guitar player. I will post further news as I hear about it.
UPDATE: I heard from a frequent collaborator with the Drops that Robinson will, indeed, be parting, Jenkins will be joining the band, and that beatboxer Adam Matta will be touring extensively with them in the future. I wish Justin the best of luck and feel certain the band will continue to churn out high-quality, high-energy music.
UPDATE #2: It’s official. From the press release by Nonesuch:
The Grammy–nominated Carolina Chocolate Drops have added two new musicians to the band: human beatboxer Adam Matta and multi-instrumentalist Hubby Jenkins. The two join the group as founding member Justin Robinson departs to take up new challenges.
“The Carolina Chocolate Drops have been playing together and touring the world for more than five years,” said Robinson. “During those years, we have experienced great successes, heartbreaks, trials and triumphs. It is, however, time for me to take a separate road and though it is bittersweet, it is the best choice. While I won’t be touring with the band full-time, I may show up on stage once in a while. I’d like to thank all of the people who have helped us on this incredible journey, the fans who’ve supported us since the very beginning and, of course, Rhiannon and Dom.”
Hubby Jenkins
