Matt D and the Profane Saints (thinking of great songwriters)-CD release party July 17, 2009
Merle. Bobby D ylan. All those mentioned earlier. Yesssss…fine songwriters.
And Matt D. (DeRiso), another fine songwriter. And it’s your lucky night to catch Matt and his band, the Profane Saints, performing at the CD release party of their latest, “Dirt Town City Limits”.
A midwest travelogue starting on the far western border of Iowa, and encircling the Dakotas, Minnesota, heading south along the Mississippi, with detours to Nashville, New Orleans, Austin and more.
Matt D’s songs? Images of spirits, ghosts, God, the Devil, blacktops, lovers, motel rooms, B-movie queens, 57 chevy’s, tent revivals, spit, gravel, tattoo’s, dirt…all propelled by the 8 cylinder testifying attack of the Profane Saints, who stop just long enough to re-fuel and wipe the bug juice off of the windshield.
“Dirt Town City Limits”- finds that perfect balance of roots-a-rock-and-a-roll, with “D” relating his tales in a voice with the honesty and humor of Johnny’s Cash and Prine, and the bark and bite of Howlin’ Wolf and Omar Dykes. Something like an honest backwoods preacher hopped up on ‘shine, and egged on by a choir of steel guitars.
So I suggest, you hop in the iron stallion with Matt D at the helm, crank up the country music on the radio, keep time with your feet crunching the aluminum empties on the floorboards , and enjoy the ride. I’m sure you won’t want it to end. Can I get an Amen!
