Merlefest and the Workplace Snafu.
Okay, so I really do not know what to write about in these blog posts. This is my second blog post in about over a month since my first post. I think that this blog post will definitely be much shorter than my first post where I tried to introduce everyone to the fact that I do not do much blogging. History proves my blogging assumptions correctly.
I have titled this blog post the way that I did because I was somewhat considering attending this year’s Merlefest. I thought about perhaps maybe attending and scheduling myself off from work with some vacation days. I was thinking along these lines a good two weeks before the Merlefest weekend. I thought to myself that I would take off Thursday and Friday from work on April 23 and 24 and use Thursday to drive to NC from KY. I would just enjoy attending Merlefest and seeing the performances on Friday and Saturday and utilize Sunday to drive myself back to KY. This was all something that I was somewhat contemplating but I had not really got into investing hotel lodging for the Merlefest weekend. I guess that it is a good thing that I was still in the preplanning stages and did not take any vacation days nor call to confirm any hotel reservations because my attending Merlefest 2009 did not happen.
The reason for my not getting to attend Merlefest is because two weeks before Merlefest something bad happened at work that was out of my control. See, I work for a large retail company that sells groceries with outlets in different parts of the U.S. My primary job task is that I work with sending out coupon invoices so that the company that I work for can receive credit for the sales associated with the coupons. In order for me to perform this function, I need to receive the weekly coupons by having each store total their coupons and send them into the office in a package with the coupons total. It is then that I take their coupon total and enter the numbers into a spreadsheet to prepare the invoice.
However, this particular week when I was still thinking of taking some vacation days for Merlefest I found myself smack dab in the middle of a promotion for some soft drinks due to the Easter holiday. A particular group of stores was suppose to classify and total up these special promotion coupons into a separate package and send them to me at the office. I don’t know what happened and there must have been a communication breakdown, but this set of stores did not follow the set forth instructions. These coupons are in the $1,000 and $2,000 coupon total range and the special promotional coupons must be separated from the normal everyday coupons. This takes time to do and to say the least it caused myself a backlog of work and a bigger mess than is normal to cleanup. I did not feel right taking a vacation with a mess at work and I ended up not going to Merlefest because I somehow knew that I would have an even bigger mess to clean up upon my return.
Note: I am not complaining about my work. I like my job and times like these, welll any time for that matter, I like being employed. What upsets me are individuals not doing their part of the job and upsetting the flow of the work. Help me so that I can help you.
