In October 1988 I had the pleasure of seeing a Neil Young & The Bluenotes concert in an old 1920s movie palace.
Beautiful venue and great memorable concert. I had purchased the Neil Young & The Bluenotes studio album before the concert and was well familiar with the material. Twilight is a stand out track on that album.
Neil Young’s upcoming release, Bluenote Cafe, features a superb and extended live version of Twilight recorded on April 23, 1988 at the Agoura Ballroom in Cleveland Ohio. I did a search on YouTube for live concert videos from Neil Young & The Bluenotes as these seem to be rare. I came across this video of Twilight with superb audio and it is the same perfromance featured on the upcoming release.
It’s great to see this and re-live the concert. What strikes me about this track is the restaint Neil Young has with his guitar playing with the horn section doing a fine job. He seems to be in sync and totally in the moment in this performance. The extended jam maintains a level of tension that keeps the listener waiting for what’s next. Also noteable is the bass work from the late Rick Rosas. His bass playing clearly stands out here and drives the song:
