Late summer is one of our favorite times of year — it’s still nice and sunny out, and it kick starts the end-of-year new release season, which typically sees the release of some of the year’s best records. One of the albums we’re especially looking forward to in summer’s twilight days is the new one from Wild Ponies, Galax.
Out August 25 via Gearbox Records, Galax is the follow-up to 2016’s Radiant. This new set sees the Nashville-based husband-and-wife duo rounding up a handful of their favorite players, like Old Time staples Kilby Spencer and Snake Smith and new roots luminaries Neilson Hubbard and Will Kimbrough. Recorded in the duo’s hometown of Galax, Virginia, the album is both an homage to their shared past and a glimpse at what Old Time-inspired roots music can look like in the future.
Album tracks include a version of the traditional song “Sally Anne” and a cover of Hazel Dickens’ “Pretty Bird.”
