New Year’s Resolutions (and I blame Obama for one of them)
Looking at the NoDepression Community and Featured Bloggers Favorite Albums Lists of 2013 left me with ideas for two resolutions for 2014. My resolutions are about revolutions: figuratively and literally, spinning albums, listening to tunes, vinyl, cds and MP3s.
Resolution Number 1: Looking at both lists I did a pretty good job listening to much of the great music that came out in 2013. I either own or at least listened to many of the artists on both lists. But yes, there were gaps. Artists I know and just never got around to picking up their 2013 releases. Artists I have never heard of. In 2014, I plan to explore more. Listen more…..I belatedly picked up Son Volt’s “Honky Tonk” and Kelly Willis and Bruce Robison”s “Cheaters Game” and both deserved the recognition NoDepression gave them. Maybe it is time to check out Milk Carton Kids, Caitlin Rose, Phosphorescent and a bunch of others.
Resolution Number 2: Looking at both lists I saw several albums that were not on MY list but were albums that I owned. From artists I loved. I own every disc these artists have ever released. I love Richard Thompson and I couldn’t name one track from “Electric”. Patty Griffin’s “American Kid”. Ditto. So this year I plan to listen more, longer, deeper, to albums I’m certain I would enjoy if I took the, if I found the time.
Resolution Number 3: Figure out how I’m ever gonna do both resolutions!
Resolution Number 4: I blame Obama for this one and no, it has nothing to do with music, nothing to do with healthcare. In 2014, there will be no more fist bumps from me. Not from a coworker. Not from a fellow concert goer. Not from your kid. Not from a stranger. Not from a friend. Don’t make me leave you hanging. I will.
