no depression festival
My wife and I came down from Vancouver BC for the festival this weekend and had a blast. We were subscribers of the magazine for the last two and a half years of its life and turned some other folks onto it as well. We love the genre, whatever it is, and were very disappointed when the magazine ceased operations. It was a lifeline to the heart of the music and we read each issue with great interest.
Even so, we may not have attended the concert due to the usual circumstances such as gravity and inertia, except that we noticed that Gillian Welch was the headliner and we have been very anxious to see her in concert. With her presence in the lineup confirmed little details like gravity and inertia were swept aside like cobwebs.
She and Mr. Rawlings did not disappoint, in fact they exceeded my high expectations. The show was so good that i’m still reeling from the after effects. Not that they were the whole show. It was a full day of fine music in which the genre, whatever it is, was absolutely represented. I wasn’t crazy about every song of every act but there were enough musical suprises throughout the day to make everything come out golden for me. Case in point: Jessica Lea Mayfield’s heartstopping cover of Buddy Holly’s Words of Love.
Thank you No Depression for organizing the event. We’ll be back and we’re bringing friends.
