No Depression Friends – Cow Bop
So the other day I wrote about Canadiana Cowboy Music and Tim Hus, well today I’d like to talk about Americana cowboy music specifically a subgenre of that music, huh? Anyway the genre is Cowboy Jazz and the band is No Depression’s own Cow Bop Now the first track I listened to by our friends was “Back in the Saddle Again” on their myspace page Now I go way back with this song (check out the picture) and remember the cowboy that originally sang the song and after listening to Cow Bop’s version it struck me that Mr. Autry did not have a guitar player like Bruce Forman in his backing band! Anyway I listened to the rest of the tracks on the myspace page and they took me back to those times, when my heroes were cowboys! You know Cheyenne, The Rifleman, Tom Jeffords (Broken Arrow) and a ton more, but I digress from the music which is great.
From their myspace page:
Western bop, Cowboy Jazz…no matter what you call it, it swings and there ain’t nothin’ else like it! Mix swingin grooves, thrilling improvisations, sweet vocals, acoustic western sensibilities and tons of fun and you have only begun to describe Cow Bop. Formed in 2003 by internationally-acclaimed guitarist Bruce Forman, Cow Bop has toured extensively throughout the country, exciting audiences with their unique brand of American music. In 2004, Cow Bop won the Route 66 Challenge, traveling the length of the storied road, having departed with only $100 and no scheduled gigs
With Bruce’s guitar leading the way and the great vocals of Pinto Pammy Cow Bop is a swinging band. Rounding out the great sound of the band are the other members Phil Salazar on fiddle, Jake Reed on drums and Alex King on bass. Here’s what some others say about the band
“Bravo! I have never attended a more inspiring performance…one of the most enjoyable bands ever. I’m a huge fan!” mandolin maestro Evan Marshall
“They put some scoobie-doo in their wahoo!” Wylie Gustafson,
Wylie & The Wild West
“It’s hot, jazzy and has a drawl!” San Francisco Chronicle
So for “The Best in Cowboy Jazz” (I know that because it says so their webpage, but after listening to the tracks I tend to agree!) ) You can check out the latest news about the group here or check out their page at No Depression
