No Depression Sessions at Folk Alliance International 2024: Humbird

Watch Siri Undlin (the songwriter behind the alias Humbird), accompanied by drummer/producer Shane Leonard and bassist/keyboardist Pat Keen, share three songs from her brand new record, Right On, during this No Depression Session from Folk Alliance International 2024. Humbird is No Depression’s Spotlight artist for April, and you can read more about her and Right On, which came out today, in this interview.
Humbird is no stranger to the “live-to-tape” session format that we use for ND sessions. Although we actually record No Depression Sessions digitally (turns out it’s rarely feasible to travel with a 24-track tape machine, ha!!) the method is similar to the tape-based workflow used on Right On: A group of outstanding musicians gathers with a batch of outstanding songs, gets a few gorgeous mics and places them thoughtfully, then watches the magic unfold.
On the record, Humbird and her collaborators tracked live and literally to tape during a two-week session at drummer/producer Shane Leonard’s studio in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Undlin tells us that the collection of songs evokes the feeling of the upper Midwest landscape, “exploring the subtlety of the prairie, the forest, and the Mississippi River Valley.” Catch the feeling here on this ND Session, then check out the studio album!
Setlist:
“Cornfields and Roadkill”
“Right On”
“Song for the Seeds”
