Check out our first No Depression Session from WinterWonderGrass in Lake Tahoe, featuring Clay Street Unit at Tahoe National Brewing Company! CSU shared three songs, two of them from their upcoming debut album, Sin and Squalor, and the third a fan favorite.
The team at Tahoe National Brewing cooked a delicious spread of Szechuan-inspired dishes, and poured plenty of fresh mountain beers. Fueled up with mountain love, we got to work. First we were treated to “Freightline Blues” from Sin and Squalor, followed by “Drive.” The third and final song is “Tired of Being Tired” from their 2022 EP A Mighty Fine Evening.
Sam Walker, frontman of the Denver-based Clay Street Unit, describes the songwriting on Sin and Squalor as a lyrical evolution from A Mighty Fine Evening. The new songs are more personal than before, confronting the real-life challenges and successes they’ve faced. Walker also describes the experience of co-writing for the first time. In the case of this new record, bandmate Scottie Bolin shares the pen and the page.
We also discuss the role Infamous Stringdusters banjoist Chris Pandolfi played as the album’s producer. Check out the full session for the songs and the stories behind them, and please stay tuned for more from WWG Tahoe ’24!
