Watch Lindsay Lou close out our No Depression Sessions series at WinterWonderGrass 2024 at the Gatekeeper’s Museum in Tahoe City. Lou is accompanied here by her chosen family and road sisters, including Fruition mandolinist Mimi Naja, Michelle MiLo Pietrafitta on drums, and Heather Gillis on bass.
All three of the songs in this ND session can be heard on Lou’s 2023 album, Queen of Time (ND review). Between songs, Lou talks about the community surrounding her that helped manifest the album. Maya de Vitry and Phoebe Hunt wrote the first song in this session, “Nothing Else Matters.” Lou initially thought they’d written it specifically for her, since the refrains hint at so much of the emotional territory she has been grappling with since the loss of her grandmother and the end of her marriage:
I’m singing, and nothing else matters
I’m weeping, and nothing else matters
I love you, and nothing else matters
The next song, “On Your Side (Starman),” is a tribute to Lou’s grandmother, who instilled in her the importance of community, and the importance of being mindful of the needs of others. Lou closes out her ND session with the last track on Queen of Time, a song soothingly bathed in three-part harmonies called “Silent.”
