It’s been a tough week in Texas.
I’ve just learned that Joe Gracey has lost his battle with cancer. Joe was a central figure in the Austin music scene back in the 70’s – he was a music writer at the Austin American-Statesman, a very popular DJ at KOKE-FM and was right in the middle of the Cosmic Cowboy / Outlaw / Redneck Rock movements as well as the infancy of the Austin City Limits television series.
For me, Joe’s work at “Super Roper Radio” – KOKE-FM helped me learn about what good music was. He didn’t follow playlists, he just served up good music.
Joe became a member here at No Depression last year. I had hoped that he would share some of his wit and music related experiences with us, but it wasn’t meant to be.
My heartfelt condolences go out to his wife, Kimmie Rhodes, who I know made Joe very happy. I believe they got to spend time recently at their house in France which I’m sure made Joe happy.
