The LA Weekly confirmed this afternoon that Andy Hummel – bassist for Big Star – has died at the age of 59. According to LA Weekly blogger Gustavo Turner:
Preston Jones of DFW.com reports: “Just got off the phone with Ardent Studios founder John Fry, who confirmed that former Big Star bassist Andy Hummel has died after a two-year battle with cancer. He was 59. Services are scheduled for Wednesday.”
Here’s video of Hummel – along with the Watson Twins and Susan Cowsill – performing during the Big Star tribute show at this year’s South by Southwest. News had just broke that weekend about Alex Chilton’s death. Big Star was slated for a performance at SXSW, but this memorial show took place instead at Antone’s:
The LA Times attributes Hummel’s death to the end of “a long illness.” RIP.
