Sarah Clanton Premieres New Track “Silver Lining”

For many artists, the 2016 election season and weeks following was a period of introspection and contemplation. That holds true for Nashville-based songwriter Sarah Clanton, who, following the presidential inauguration earlier this year, conducted a “24-hour album project.” The project is precisely what it sounds like: 24 hours during which Clanton does nothing but write new music, with no editing or self-censorship allowed. 

One of the songs birthed in that session was “Silver Lining,” a track Clanton wrote with fellow songwriter Mary Bragg. While the pair didn’t actually write the song during the allotted 24 hours, they found their inspiration — a fire at a church across the street from Clanton’s house — during that fateful day.

“The night the church burnt we let those folks from the church come into our yard, park their cars, and mourn what they were losing,” Clanton says. “It got me thinking about how much I have learned from watching the many ways that people live and how I have learned so much just by talking to them. It got me thinking that even though the election didn’t go how many of us expected it to go that maybe, just maybe, good could come from something like a fire, or the unthinkable.”
