Sarah Savoy & the Francadians – Gloucester Cajun & Zydeco Festival 2010
Gloucester is, as far as I’m aware, the last remaining Cajun & Zydeco festival in the UK, (Apart from the very wonderful Bristol Festival which I’d better mention or Satu will break my legs…!) although C/Z bands make their way over here (not often enough as far as I’m concerned) to play, sporadically. It wasn’t too far a leap for Sarah Savoy & the Francadians – Sarah, despite her Eunice LA roots is now resident in Paris. Such geographical closeness has helped for visits to these shores on a slightly more frequent basis than the core of Louisana bands and there was warm familiar camaraderie between band and the passionate UK dance crowd . Musically, from these ears, the band missed the presence of a drummer in a room the size of a Guildhall, but performed an enthusiastic, well-received set of what might be described as cajun-country-hillbilly. Great vocals from Mme Savoy, despite a nasty throat infection and sympathetic box-playing from the talented David Rolland. Sarah and band are playing at the 2010 Saulieu Cajun and Zydeco festival in France in August – I played there last year and had a fine time – I can see them being well-received.
