I was taking my morning constitutional (If you don’t know what that is google Harry Truman and search for constitutional) and listening to my iPod on shuffle. I was thrilled to hear Richie Havens singing the Peter Yarrow song – the Great Mandala. Here is the two of them playing it.
That was great, but then the very next songs starts out almost identically but is so different in style and subject.
So did Peter Yarrow know the Bill Monroe song and adapt it? Is it relatively common for songs to sound this close? I know that songs in the same key and mode can be strung together and sound good together. But these songs from seemingly disparate genres struck me as unusual. Has anyone else had a similar experience where you suddenly noticed that two songs from very different sources had a lot in common?
