Sing Me A Song For Jerry Springer
While I’m not a fan of trashy TV talk show host Jerry Springer or his show, there are apparently plenty of people who are–including some who have even written songs about him, or the show. Right now on the Jerry Springer Show website, they’re holding a song contest for the best ode to Jerry.
They’re down to ten semi-finalists, with the top three getting to appear on the show and the winner taking home $5,000. As one might expect, the submissions are a mixed bag of mostly homemade and horribly produced videos, with the songs in them even worse.
There are a couple of exceptions, songs that might actually pass muster in front of a non-Springer crowd, even. The best of them (and the one you ought to go vote for) is by a grizzled veteran of the coastal South Carolina music scene, Frank Carlier. He sent out the following message to his friends and fans:
Greetings from Frank Carlier
Hope this note finds you well.
This will let you all know the new high in low I have been sinking to musically.
The media company that I work with submitted my Jerry Springer song off my last CD into his show for a songwriting contest he is having and it made the top ten.
I figure what the Hell? Why not try the darker side of the Americana market?
You may vote for me by going to his site www.jerryspringertv.com and hit the circle that says Frank “I’m going on the Jerry Springer Show” and that is it.
You can vote 5 times a day but you have to back out of the site each time. [ not that I expect that…. but if you are bored]
Please pass this on of your bulk email list or to anyone who might be interested in voting. It’s free.
If I get to the top 3, I perform on the show.
Then I will pull my pants down and show the world my butt.
Thanks for your time Frank Carlier
Frank’s song, “I’m Going On the Jerry Springer Show,” is as bitingly satirical as anything in the Todd Snider catalogue, and the video he produced for the contest is way better than anything else up against him in the semifinals. Can’t say I’m looking forward to witnessing his naked (censored, surely) butt on the show, but I would not be surprised in the least if he makes it into the top three.
Here’s a direct link to the contest page, which has all the semifinalist song videos available to hear and vote on: Springer Singer Search
