Song Premiere: Sweetwater String Band Share “Same Stars”
Founded in the Eastern Sierra of California in 2008, Sweetwater String Band – Scott Roberts (mandolin), David Huebner (cello), Jeff Meadway (guitar), and Patrick Ferguson (bass) – is cello driven “soulgrass.” Beginning with a weekly gig at their local bar, the band quickly found themselves on the biggest stage in the area less than a year later at the Millpond Music Festival and from there, the quartet never looked back. While their music often deals with issues such as mountaintop removal coal mining, workers rights, and finding a middle ground in today’s divided political arena, the seriousness is balanced by ghost stories, drinking songs, improvised jams, and tales from the lonesome road. Their third album, At Night, is due September 29th and today they share the album’s thoughtful opener, “Same Stars.”
Roberts, who is the principal songwriter alongside Huebner, had this to say about the track, “Same Stars was written after hearing the heartbreaking stories on the news detailing the struggle of refugees all over the world, from Africa and Europe to the Americas. And a realization that we all share the same stars overhead even though our backgrounds and daily lives may be so different. For me, I realized that, as the chorus references, perhaps being born in such a beautiful and strong country (USA), I had an easier journey than others. My heart goes out to all of those that have had to leave their home and birthplace due to circumstances out of their control.”
