SPOTLIGHT: Bright Eyes Performs ‘Persona Non Grata’ [VIDEO]
EDITOR’S NOTE: Bright Eyes is No Depression’s Spotlight band for August 2020. Read our feature story about the band and their new album, Down in the Weeds, Where the World Once Was, here, and read multi-instrumentalist Nate Walcott’s essay on finding a silver lining to downtime here.
Down in the Weeds, Where the World Once Was, the latest album from Bright Eyes, was released into a world where separation is the norm, thanks to the coronavirus. It’s a perfect setting for an album marked by unsettledness, but there’s a thread of hope that runs through that also offers a bit of balm in this moment. In other words, nine years after their last album together, we find Bright Eyes back with more of what we love them for: one-of-a-kind lyrics that capture moods that are hard to put into words, set to music that feels universal and uniting.
Though they can’t be united in person right now for the world tour they’d planned for Down in the Weeds, Where the World Once Was, the three members of Bright Eyes are still sharing their music the best they can: online and on video. And for No Depression readers they made a live studio recording of their song “Persona Non Grata,” with Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis at their studio in Omaha, Nebraska, and Nate Walcott in Los Angeles.
