EDITOR’S NOTE: Lizzie No is No Depression’s Spotlight artist for January 2024. Read more about her and her new album, Halfsies, out Jan. 19 on Miss Freedomland Records / Thirty Tigers, in our interview, and look for more from No throughout the month.
Like many of the songs on Halfsies, the new album from Lizzie No, “Getaway Car” dreams of an escape to something better. And dreams like that feel bigger and closer when they’re shared with someone else.
No started writing the song in her mid-20s, she tells No Depression in the video below, and she gathered details to bolster her point over the years.
“It’s about that reckless camaraderie that you have with your besties that you’ve known since you were really young and foolish,” she explains. “It’s about throwing parties where the cops get called, it’s about smoking a cigarette on the porch with your best girlfriend dreaming that someday you’re gonna be someone. … It’s about fighting your way through the stuff that tries to make you feel small.”
In addition to sharing the backstory of the song and then performing it in this video, No offers something else, too — a book recommendation!
She recommends checking out Wayward Lives, Beautiful Experiments: Intimate Histories of Riotous Black Girls, Troublesome Women, and Queer Radicals by Saidiya Hartman “if you want to learn more about wild young women making something of themselves in the world and fighting against everything in society that’s telling them to be quiet.”
