SXSW No Wristband required parties!
Next Tuesday March 13th kicks off the 25th South by Southwest Music Conference and Festival (SXSW) held in Austin Texas (this week Austin hosts its sister Film Festival). The six-day Festival encompasses a wide variety of music including country, folk, jazz, blues and rock and every variation within those genres. The official Festival has grown from 700 registrants in 1987 to 16,000 registrants in 2012. Described on their website as the “most anticipated convergence of all things music” it involves not only live music acts, but panel discussions with key players from the industry and a SXSW trade show.
Registration can be pricey for the event, and depending on the level of registration, you will be handed either a badge or wristband that allows you to attend the thousands of musical showcases being performed in and around the city. Since the Festival has grown in attendance, there has been also been a growth in “unofficial” showcases popping up during the Festival that don’t require you to have a badge or wristband and that are not necessarily affiliated with the Conference.
I will be heading down in an unofficial capacity and I’m sharing my list of showcases not to miss in the Americana/Country/Folk music genres. There are just too many to be all-inclusive, but this is what has hit my radar. (Note: most of the showcases do not require a badge or wristband, but some may require an RSVP or a cover charge. Some locations will fill to capacity, so you will need to get there early).
