Terence Martin – Even Trade/Last Black and White TV
Previously posted: Me, Myself, Music and Mysteries
Last night and portions of this morning I had the MP3 player on shuffle and heard some tracks from a variety of the artists I’ve been listening to including Ben Bedford, Nate Grower, some good picking on that one.. Carrie Hassler, Charlie McCoy, Cherryholmes IV , The Daddy Mack Blues Band and The Turnpike Troubadours… the more I hear from their album Diamonds and Gasoline the more I like it particularly “7 and 7”, love the line “I had no clue, I’d be the boy who, mama warned you about” and the title track “Diamonds and Gasoline”
Also yesterday I downloaded an album by an artist that I’ve heard several times on XM Radio The Village and really haven’t downloaded any of his music. The artist is Terence Martin his new album is titled The Last Black and White TV when I went to Rhapsody they didn’t have that album so I downloaded and listen to his 2008 release Even Trade and I really liked it and others have too! From his website:
Of Terence’s previous CD, Even Trade, Sing Out Magazine says: “If you’re a connoisseur of exceptional songwriters, this CD is essential to your collection
“Terence Martin’s use of metaphor and symbol are as finely writ as any serious novelist and stand on a peer footing with the work of Neil Young or Bob Dylan.” (John Hammel, Homegrown Radio)
“An extraordinarily skillful writer whose powerful songs are impossible to forget.” (Charlie Backfish ,WUSB radio)
Even Trade was the fifth album by the New York singer-songwriter. According to his website Martin.. has performed on the Most Wanted Stage at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, been a New Folk winner at the NJ Folk Festival, a finalist in the Mountain Stage New Song Contest, received honorable mention in the Mid Atlantic Song Contest for “East of the River” and performed at the Boston Folk Festival. His song, “Go Ask the Rain” from Even Trade, was selected for Best Song in the male singer songwriter category, in the 2009 Just Plain Folks Music Award.
As I was listening to the album again tonight I noted “Go Ask the Rain” as one of the stand out tracks on the album along with “Never Look Back”, “Even Trade” and “California” okay here I go again I’ll probably end by listing all the tracks! Anyway I liked the album so much that I went to CDBaby and bought the new album
Here’s what CDBaby says about Martin
Haunting & poetic singer/songwriter, this CD highlights the simplicity and honesty of the songs, with imagery drawn from an America that everyone has forgotten existed.
Anyway I’ve only listened briefly to the new album but I like it more each time I hear it. Some of the stand-out tracks on the first listen include, the title track “The Last Black and White TV”, Miles from Here”, “Short on Words” and “River’s Still Rising” but like the other album they’re all good!
So if you never heard Terence Martin check him out! As for me I’m going to keep listening to these two albums and check out some of his earlier work!
Here’s “California” from Even Trade
