What a wonderful surprise this album this album turned out to be, possessed with a crystalline and expressive vocal my attention was focused from track one on Miss Quincy’s second album a self release put together with a select band of fellow Canadian roots musicians, recording took place in a log cabin in Northern BC with the outside temperature dropping to forty below the band played on indoors producing a sweet set of tunes.
No doubt the “voice” is the star of the show for me but that’s not to take anything away from the songs themselves, clear and uncluttered arrangements provide the structure to a range of styles with a warm vintage feel, the supporting cast play no small part there’s some excellent strumming, picking and plucking on show from Craig Korth (guitar/banjo), Reno Finch ( mandolin). Pete Mynett (upright bass), Josh Giesbrecht (violin) and Don Gothard’s (Dobro).
Elements of country, blues, jazz and bluegrass with a touch of the theatrical for good measure, the ten-track album includes an instrumental and a cover of Memphis Minnie’s Bad Luck Woman one of the many highlights of the album featuring classic blues harp with upright bass and that special vocal, other stand out tracks for me the banjo laden Wild Mountain Flower that jumped straight into my banjo girl playlist (more of that at a later date) and Record Store a lament to being the other women who feel’s “pain like Hank Williams” and likes her water with a little whiskey – in fact whiskey crops up a few times on the album including another highlight Water and Whiskey where the songstress experiences a “bourbon haze since you’ve being gone”, another slap shot Canadian roots album that’s bang on target, the albums out now, I’ll will be definitely getting myself a a copy of the debut release too.
