The Eagles “Rake It To The Limit”
The outdoor concert season has begun in North Carolina and there are several venues where you can catch free or inexpensive music in the area nearly every weekend. I started off my summer right with a performance by Austin Collins and Craig Bagby at David Rose’s Farm.
Over the course of the summer I’ll catch John Howie Jr. a couple times with one of his new bands (Saxapahaw and Southern Village), Bowerbirds (Duke’s Music In The Gardens), Thad Cockrell (American Tobacco Amphitheatre) and whoever is playing the Eno Festival (last year’s highlights were the Dex Romweber Duo and Jason Ringenberg).
Tickets are cheap or free and a hat or boot is passed to collect gas money for the band. Maybe I’ll buy a t-shirt or a CD. In exchange you’re treated to a couple hours of music in an intimate setting by musicians who truly appreciate the moral and financial support. Invite them over for dinner and watch the line between fan and performer blur into friendship.
