If Michelle Shocked hadn’t gone off the deep end. Hadn’t been dropped by major labels. And hadn’t been such a radical figure I suspect she’d still be at the top of the Americana heap. It’s probably a little too late For Michelle Shocked to get back to the top, but the little I’ve heard from her upcoming record Soul Of My Soul makes it seem possible.
As with her past handful of records she’ll be releasing it herself on her Mighty Sound Records label. Here’s the anti-government, anti-big business song “Pompeii”. She has admitted to losing some of her rage (perhaps due to the fact that she’s quit drinking) and also the Obama victory has given her some hope so the song is milder than her recent work but every bit as topical.
