this week in texas twang #2: Street Sweeper Social Club
Street Sweeper Social Club, fronted by Tom Morello (former Rage Against the Machine guitarist) and Boots Riley (lyrical spinner for legendary hip-hop group The Coup) took a page straight out of the Bob Dylan songbook, mixing medicine and fighting government on the pent up pavement.
Socking it to the man in matching high-ranking black military jackets and aviator shades, SSSC kicked off the SXSW Stubb’s Rachel Ray day party with the guitar-heavy “Fight! Smash! Win!,” complete with rapid-fire lyrics fit for a whistle-blowing revolutionary movement, musical propaganda, political momentum and all.
They forcefully pumped out the jams causing a relentless mob to form in the streets proving they’re not just a band, they’re literally a social club, street sweeping combustible rhythms and venomous riffs across the nation a la Woody Guthrie, with a little Wyclef Jean thrown in.
