this week in texas twang #3: Jesse Dayton
Jesse Dayton‘s brand of turbo country is as clear as moonshine. It reeks of Waylon Jennings steeped in bar-drinking America, he pays homage to the hottest couples of country music circa 1970 a la Johnny and June (with a little help from local Austin songstress Brennen Leigh of course), and he plays the proverbial poster child for the rockabilly redneck, but true fans recognize him as the psychotic hellbilly band leader Captain Clegg in Rob Zombie‘s horror flick Halloween II.
Want more? Straight from the mouth of Dayton himself…
Describe your sound in 3 words.
Fearless, Trashy, Vulnerable
Favorite song you ever wrote?
“I’m At Home Getting Hammered, While She’s Out Getting Nailed” …Came up w/ it in a hotel in LA after 7 Makers on the rocks and literally never wrote the words down…it was so good I could just remember it.
Who are your influences?
George Jones and Reverend Venerable from the 2nd Pentecostal Church in Beaumont TX.
What was the last album you bought?
The new Mike Stinson record called “Jukebox In Your Heart.” His songs kill me!
(Insert disclaimer here: Dayton is also the knob-twister for said record.)
What’s your favorite song to play live?
A new one called “Think Of Me Darlin’ When Ya Take Out The Trash” cause I sing the living shit out of it.
Working on anything new we should know about?
Writing/directing a zombie movie in New Orleans…Working on the soundtrack.
What’s your most memorable road story?
Too self-incriminating too reveal, but there was a donkey, a mariachi singer and a one-arm hooker involved.
What’s the best cure for a hangover?
Zico Coconut Water…it rehydrates you to your feet.
Tell us a fact about yourself we probably don’t already know.
I like Mariachi bands, love riding donkeys and will never trust a one-arm hooker…ever.
Famous last words?
Jesse Dayton could do it all and by-God he did.
