this week in texas twang #5: John Evans Band
It’s all about the hair. First it was a Buddy Holly moptop, than a slicked up mohawk, dead give away for what to expect next from the self-proclaimed king of hot rod country, vigilante punk rocker and always country crooner.
That’s right, John Evans Band is revved up & riled up with a slew of CD’s in tow….the newest, Lollygaggin’, sounds like Junior Brown joyriding on a freshly tuned Harley Davidson, and Lucky 13, where Evans, prone to singing about rough yet adventurous road life and the pitfalls of love with muscle and moxy, even manages a throwback to honky-tonks of old, a straight kick in Trashville…err, Nashville’s teeth but even more Evansesque is “Going Down Loud”…
Describe your sound in 3 words.
Honky Tonk Stomp
Favorite song you ever wrote? Why?
The last song I wrote. Each one is personal and inspires me to keep on keeping on.
(Guess catching him live is the only way to find out more about that one.)
Who are your influences?
Hank Williams, Elvis and Joe Montana.
What was the last album you bought?
The Unforgettable Hank Williams
What’s your favorite song to play live? Why?
“Whiskey Warm And Delta High.” This song is nothing but pocket and I get to loose it at the end.
Working on anything new we should know about?
Just moved to Austin in February. Everything is new and exciting and I’m writing like a freak. About to jump in the studio for a follow up to Lollygaggin’.
What’s your most memorable road story?
We played a show in Denver. It’s 3am and I’m driving through the streets of downtown. I see steam coming out of the middle of the street and think it’s a great opportunity for a Bon Jovi pic. I jumped in the middle of it and proceeded to literally melt one of my legs. There’s a big difference between fog and steam. I’m a dumbass.
What’s the best cure for a hangover?
Menudo
Tell us a fact about yourself we probably don’t already know.
I have great hair and I’m modest about it.
Famous last words?
My tattoos are scars.
Coming soon to a honky-tonk or Waffle House near you…
