Trout Steak Revival Premieres New Song “They Sang to Us”
Songwriters often find inspiration in personal trauma, and can sometimes find healing in such inspiration, too. Such was the case for Trout Steak Revival’s Will Koster, who found emotional healing in writing about a brain injury that left him in a state of uncertainty.
“I wrote the song ‘They Sang to Us’ a few months after I experienced a traumatic brain injury,” Koster explains. “It was a confusing time to try and understand what happened and the duration of my brain’s healing process.”
“They Sang to Us,” which comes from the Colorado band’s forthcoming album Spirit to the Sea, sets the experience of one of Koster’s more vivid memories to hopeful, gentle music. Lush strings and a rolling melody complement Koster’s story of finding beauty and healing in nature.
“Memories surrounding the accident seemed lost or fuzzy except for one of a beautiful wintery day up in Ward, Colorado, a few weeks before the injury,” Koster adds. “A couple friends and I had spent the day walking around on a frozen, spring-fed lake, where the water seemed to be boiling under the ice that we walked on. We sang songs and danced around on the lake to take in the surreal, wintery scene and each other’s company. I connected this strong visceral memory to the healing process that I was going through to try and help make sense of the unclear and uneven path of mending that I was navigating.”
Spirit to the Sea is out November 3. Listen to “They Sang To Us” below.
