US Steel says forget about watching the Steelers…
CLAIRTON, Pa. – It’s only natural that Pittsburgh-area steel workers would want to watch the Pittsburgh Steelers in Sunday’s Super Bowl.
But the United Steelworkers union is blasting a U.S. Steel memo saying that workers in the Clairton, Irvin and Edgar Thomson works who miss work Sunday or Monday “without just cause” will face “severe disciplinary action.”
A U.S. Steel spokeswoman said the company doesn’t comment on employee relations.
USW International vice president Tom Conway responded to the memo with an e-mail — in black-and-gold type — that suggested adjusting work schedules so volunteers who don’t want to watch the game can work during it. Conway suggested any lost production during Sunday’s 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. shift could be made up later in the week.

This Tom Russell song “US Steel” is one I’ve loved for years, and I’m happy to see that the original version was included in his latest acoustic album. I grew up in Pennsylvania, and for many years made my living traveling throughout the old coal and steel towns peddling music. This song captures it all.
