Video Review: sami.the.great “Hear Me Now”
Breaking away from her traditional folk roots, sami.the.great last week released a video for her latest single, “Hear Me Now,” which sees the Brooklyn-based, Iranian-American singer/songwriter take a more psychedelic approach to the track.
Never one to deny the fact that ice-cream does help to mend a break up, her stellar voice carries a strong sense of emotion and wit. “Hear Me Now” is a bold proclamation of Sami’s incredibly upbeat disposition, which is hard to ignore beneath the single’s unrelenting bass line. Sami proclaims; “They try to beat me/Try to defeat me/They try to cheat me/But they don’t have no luck,” amidst an explosion of psychedelic imagery that can only be described as the down the rabbit hole world that is, sami.the.great.
The clip pays homage to the doo-wop ballads of the 60’s and 70’s, an era which Sami admits she is heavily influenced by. The clip even see’s the singer, normally renowned for her cute pixie cut, donning a wig somewhat reminiscent of the regal Jackie Kennedy.
Sami tends to steer clear from the bigger production based clips, usually opting for a more stripped back and organic form of performance. She explains, “I’d never done anything on green screen before so it was interesting reacting to things that weren’t there and not really knowing what it was going to look like in the end,” she says. “I am so happy with the trippy, psychedelic results!”
